Why live locally?

This blog all came to be from a sense of urgency that I felt about helping small businesses. In a community that is growing too fast, I have seen great family owned business struggle and close down. In an effort to spread the awareness of all of the great eclectic local venues in the Dallas area I decided to start writing about them. I hope that you enjoy and decide to take a visit to some of these places soon!

Puckett's Nursery-Allen, Tx.

Puckett's is a local family run nursery that has excellent plants of all types. They also cary garden decor, pots and anything related to gardening. Today I went to Puckett's because I needed some potting soil and ended up with a beautiful plant. Every time I visit Puckett's, I always admire their awesome succulent arrangements. Each large arrangement runs from $35 to $50, which is a hard pill for me to swallow. Today, when I walked in I noticed that all of their succulent arrangements were marked down to $9.99. What a deal! I was ecstatic and ended up HAVING to get one for my office. The owners said that their greenhouse is not big enough to hold all of their succulents, so they had to mark them down drastically. So if you love succulents, then go check out Puckett's in Allen on Main Street, just north of Jupiter. Here is the address if you want to buy plants from a small business with g
reat people!
811 E. Main St.
Allen, Tx.

Here is a picture of my beautiful succulent arrangment that was $9.99!!!

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema-Richardson

There's a new cinema in town! The Alamo Drafthouse just opened up it's first DFW cinema at Beltline and HWY 75 in Richardson. This is a Austin based movie theatre chain has a small number of screens and relies on proper movie etiquette. They have a strong no phone policy and minors must be accompanied by an adult. Alamo Drafthouse also provides local organic food and beer from nearby breweries. My husband and I are going to check it out this weekend, you should too!!!

Cottonwood Art Festival!

This weekend is one of my favorite festivals, one because it's free and two you can support your local artists! The Cottonwood Art Festival in Richardson is a two day outdoor festival that showcases a variety of artists from painters to metalworks to jewelry made out of old coins. This festival has it all and then some! Be sure to check out their hours of operation for Saturday and Sunday. They have great food, fun for the kids and live entertainment. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and it will be a nice weekend to visit!

Willie's Farmers Market

If you are looking for fresh fruit and vegetables close to Plano/Allen/Frisco/McKinney, look no further! My husband and I set off to the "country" today in search of a fresh produce stand. After traveling through Parker and Lucas we came upon a small country vegetable stand on the side of the road in East McKinney. This vegetable stand was something that you would see out of a movie. It was owned by the farmer "Willie" who owns the adjoining 11 acre farm. They sell fresh tomatoes, cantaloupe, the world's largest green onions, sweet potatoes, new potatoes, baking potatoes, zucchini, squash, onions you name it! All of the produce was extremely fresh and I have never smelt such sweet smelling cantaloupe.

Not only do they sell fresh produce, they also sell potted herbs. I was able to get a 2 ft. tall rosemary bush for $8.00. Willie's market also has canned products such as candied jalapeƱos, pumpkin butter, fresh fruit preserves and local honey. We plan on making this be a weekly staple. Not is it a beautiful scenic drive, but the produce is worth the 20 minute drive out of town. When we visit next, I will be sure to post a picture of this great local farmers market. Support our local farmers and give Willie's market a visit!

If you want to visit Willie's here are my awful directions :)

From Highway 75, exit Stacey and take a right.

Follow Stacey all the way until you pass Heritage Ranch community and golf course.
Then you will take a right on Old Stacey Rd and follow this until it becomes Orr Rd.
If you continue to go straight and yield right, you will see Willie's Farmers Market on your left hand side. Below is the address of the "area" in which it was, there is no specific address. Sorry about that, I hope to add more info the next time I visit!

3130 County Road 324

McKinney, TX. 75069

Below are the recipes that I used for our fresh vegetable dinner!
